As I sat down with a broccoli and rice stir fry, Missy called on Facetime, her eyes bright and amused.

“You’ll never guess what happened,” she giggled.

“Judging by the look on your face, I’m going to guess you got laid,” I ventured. Missy groaned but laughed.

“Is it that obvious?”

“A little,” I tittered. “Who’s the lucky guy? And please don’t say Patrick.”

“Patrick? I’d almost forgotten about that moron.”

“Didn’t you just sleep with him like a month ago?”

“A lot can happen in a month.”

I snorted. “Who’s the latest?”

“This guy is a warlock. He’s from Orlando and—”

I sat up, the phone almost falling out of my hand.

“Wait, what?” I gasped. “Where did you meet him?”

Missy’s face shadowed. “Here. He’s visiting for a few days and staying at the Irving. Actually, the Irving is filled to capacity. I think there’s a conference going on or something. Ali told me that she met a warlock in the grocery store yesterday.”

“Okay, this is weird,” I muttered.

“What?”

“A warlock from Jacksonville just came to my house—and brought me flowers.”

Missy laughed, but the troubled look didn’t fade from her eyes. “Flowers are better than an attack.”

“Don’t you think it’s odd that so many warlocks are appearing in Ashpoint?”

“Maybe it’s because Wyatt’s still here,” she suggested, but I wasn’t sure that was the case.

“Does Ryker know about this?” I asked, knowing that the pack leader was not going to like an influx of warlocks honing in on his territory.

“Ryker isn’t in charge of travel and tourism,” Missy retorted. “These guys aren’t causing any trouble, and it’s about time we got some fresh meat in Ashpoint!”

I had no argument. For as much as Virgil had caught me off guard, I didn’t think he was dangerous.

“Anyway, that was some wild, unadulterated magic sex,” Missy went on. “Ryker is not about to dictate my sex life, thank you very much.”

“I pity the man who stands between you and your perversions,” I teased her.

“You’re starting to sound like Essie.”

“Bite your tongue.”

“Oh, shit. Are you eating?” she asked, noticing the plate in front of me for the first time. “Why didn’t you say anything?”

“It’s all good,” I promised.

“Is it, though? You’re fully vegetarian now, aren’t you? Is it really good?”

“Shut up,” I laughed. “Keep me posted about these warlocks.”

“Will do, sister. Talk to you soon.”

She disconnected the call, and I picked up my fork, but I barely tasted anything as I ate.

Why are all these warlocks coming to Ashpoint now? And should we be worried?
